InterContinental San Francisco, an IHG Hotel, hotel in San Francisco

Overlooking San Francisco's SoMa area and moments from top city center sites, InterContinental San Francisco provides guests with modern in-room amenities.

They gave me a late checkout of 4 pm without me asking for it. This is a big deal. I am a returning customer for Intercontinental and I stayed for a week so I liked that they did this for me and I am likely to recommend and stay at this hotel for years to come. All these little things make a lot of difference and I hope other hotels understand this and take proactive steps for their customers. It made me enjoy the last day morning much better.

FAQs about hotels in San Francisco

An Icon of Liberalism

Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.

Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.

In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.

Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.

As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!

All big cities have a downside and that doesn’t exclude SF.

All big cities have a downside and that doesn’t exclude SF. Yes, there are some areas that are exacerbated by homelessness and decline of business. However, that isn’t the whole story. The city still has vibrant neighborhoods, incredible sights, and extraordinary dining options you’d be hard to find elsewhere. Make sure you go beyond the Pier 39 area or Golden Gate Bridge; yes quintessential. Some other great highlights include a day trip to Angel Island, an outing to Crissy Field or Baker Beach or in the presidio area in general, visiting the Lincoln Park neighborhood with the Legion of Honor and surrounding trails and cliff views, Golden Gate Park with the Japanese tea garden, the botanical gardens, and the several museums like de Yound and California Academy of Sciences, the food in the mission neighborhood alone could be a day….the options are endless and that’s just SF. Plenty of surrounding suggestions like Muir Woods, Sausalito, Oakland, Berkeley, Napa and Sonoma, Monterey Bay, Point Reyes, Santa Cruz to name a few.

I only had two nights and one full day. I love walking.

I only had two nights and one full day. I love walking. I walked 30km all around SF. Golden gate. Ocean beach. The city. Everything. Also used public transport to and from airport. For me it is all about the beauty of the The Bay and the buildings architecture and general scenery. Only downsides - Chinatown was crap - nothing like the real thing - full of crap tourist gifts - very few restaurants and very few Chinese people. Fisherman’s wharf is a bit overrated too. But it’s ok for a quick walk to get the feel of it all. Only other downside is some of the less safe areas in the downtown area.

Since the homeless were hustled out of the City to make it...

Since the homeless were hustled out of the City to make it look good for the Chinese visitors a while ago, it's not as bad as it was but still not great. However, there are still many car break-ins happening and are warned by the hotels to not leave anything in your car. The DeYoung Museum, The Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, Japantown, China Town, The Momo and the wharfs are all favorite places to visit. Getting around is very slow due to traffic and parking is expensive. When you leave the City, do not attempt it past 2:30PM as traffic is barely creeping. I suggest taking Lift or Uber around the City during your stay, they are everywhere and inexpensive. We always eat in Japantown, restaurants in the Filmore District, and just outside of Golden Gate Park. Enjoy the City as there is a lot to experience.

We stayed in union Square area and it was a 5 minute walk from the Powel station bart. The area felt safe and clean, we stayed away from the Tenderloin. Taking the cable cars to peir 39 was fun, so many great places to eat seafood and visit the shops, we saw an improvement in panhandling and streets were clean we are already planning our next visit. We recommend eating at the Sears restaraunt and Lori's 50's diner, the Matador for Mexican food, and The Chancellor Hotel was excellent.

I really liked the complementary coffee and lounge area. As for the room, it was indeed very small. I didn’t mind that much as I was staying outside the hotel for the whole day but the space would be too small if you’d like to spend more time there. Also the location was not the best - on one hand in the downtown, close to train station and many attractions, but on the other just in the middle of the biggest homeless camps in San Francisco. You need to move through them to get to entrance, almost literally:(

Tea/cordial time in the afternoon was great as was coffee in the mornings. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Walking distance to Union Square and many restaurants in the area. The room was spacious (2 bedroom suite) and the decor was wonderful. The older theme fit the hotel and its historic nature. It felt like a bed and breakfast but without the breakfast. All in all it was a wonderful stay and we will definitely stay there again when we go back next year.

The location a block from Union Square was ideal. The Curan theatre is across that street and Grace Cathedral is up the hill. The Warrick provides a good value for the area, where many rooms are in the $500 range. This may seem superfluous, but the in-room HVAC unit was quiet enough to sleep. So often those units are so loud, that one has to choose to be comfortable or sleep. Maybe the best part is the Tapas restaurant on the main floor. Bota was fantastic.

Inn San Francisco is a real hidden gem. It may be slightly outside the 'touristy' areas of San Francisco, but it's easy to get back and forth on the city buses. In return for this slight distance, we had a large and beautiful family room, with lots of old-fashioned decor and thoughtful touches. The included breakfast was absolutely superb - one of the best we've had in any small hotel around the world. Many thanks to the staff for their warm hospitality.

It’s a modern and cozy hotel. Located just one block away from union square! Totally comfortable and equipped with all you need for a short stay: it has a laundry room with coffee machine and hot and cold water. There are public restrooms other than the one in your room. There’s also a great dining area where you can eat or just lay down with your computer. The room was rather small but the beds were awesome ! Super comfy. I’ll come back for sure

The location is very near to Chinatown where the cable cars can be spotted and 5-10min walk from Union Square. Although there is no parking in the hotel premises, there is a safe, clean and well-lit parking garage one block across the hotel which is reasonably priced compared to others in the area. The staff are also friendly and accommodating - they let us leave our luggage while waiting for our bus to LA. Special thank you to Lita and Daniel!

Location is great, but also the decoration inside is - little paintings on doors and walls are cute. Small but filling continental breakfast, helped start our days. Every day the towels were replaced and the room cleaned. Easy walk downhill to Union square and Powell St Bart, but best to Uber from airport with luggage as it’s uphill to the hotel

Perfect location for getting to all areas around Union Square and for walking further across the city. Loved the views from nearby Nob Hill and plenty of places for a wonderful breakfast, including the cafe attached to the hotel, around.
